"Health & Social Care (Issues on inequality & Self Directed Support )"

About: Glasgow City Council Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Trauma & orthopaedics (wards 26, 27, 61 & 62 ) New Stobhill Hospital / Physiotherapy Thornliebank Resource Centre

(as a carer),

I came across the NHS Scotland page about the overview of the right to health while looking for information to help and support my autistic with learning disability son .

My son is 37 years old , and has no capacity and receives a Local Authority Social Care budget re Self Directed Support within the city of Glasgow (Glasgow City HSCP) . I am my son's representative re Guardianship In place

He has a very vague support plan in place with very vague outcomes , my son has recently been discharged from the Learning Disability Nursing Team, although we have input from Physiotherapy. His Autism Strategy has been put on hold also. this is still waiting to be fully completed especially regarding my son's respite budget that was classed as a need re assessment .

The decision making of choice of how my son takes his respite lies with this service, and not my son. Due to this my son's respite budget has been lying unutilised for over four years now.

My son has had ongoing back and hip issues for years , he has had two x-rays of his hips and has been assessed by Learning Disabled Physiotherapist from Stobhill Hospital , he has been seen by Orthopaedic at Glasgow Royal Infirmary but there seems to be conflicting issue re diagnosis between radiographers report and consultant - no MRI has been considered for my son .

My son received a six week block Hydrotherapy sessions at Thornliebank Resource Centre requested by the Orthopaedic consultant and arranged by Learning Disability Nurse .

Over two months ago my son was again in terrible pain and I contacted LD team again , but was told referral for Hydrotherapy could not take place as Thornliebank had maintenance problems . my son was directed to Tollcross Lesiure Centre for swimming pool exercises to take place with his commissioned care provider workers ?

When I enquired about sessions to take place at Tollcross Leisure Centre swimming pool , I was informed that resources had to be kept locally , I would like to point out - my son is self funding this from his DWP benefits as authorisation from his Self Directed Support option 2 budget - was refused on paying for entry to swimming pool or even the use of the gym that my son has been using re exercise to help with his weight issue.

With my son self funding this because of no reasonable adjustments in place regarding NHS Hydrotherapy in place for Learning disabled people , I am afraid my view on this is , that there is indeed an NHS inequality taking place towards my son as a learning disabled person .

The Health and Social Integration re assessment of my son's needs has inequalities throughout, on meeting his needs in his support plan. I believe Glasgow have a flawed implementation of Self Directed Support. this very much has a detrimental impact on my son regarding his human rights re social determinants .

I write to you looking for help and support regarding - finding out more about right to health for direction regarding my son.

Dear Glinda

Thank you for taking the time to share your son’s story on Care Opinion.

I am very sorry to hear about your son’s experience and can only imagine how frustrating this is for you as a parent.

I have shared your post with colleagues from Glasgow City HSCP and they would like to look into this further and see how we can take this forward. I would be grateful if you could contact Julia Egan, Chief Nurse, Glasgow City HSCP (Email: Julia.Egan@ggc.scot.nhs.uk telephone number: 0141 287 0440).

Kind Regards

Nicole
