"Tearing my calf muscle"

About: New Victoria Hospital / Minor injuries unit

(as a service user),

I stepped off a chair and felt a pop in my calf and pain.   A couple of days later I went to minor injuries at the New Victoria Hospital.   I was told I had torn my calf muscle, was given a couple of support bandages and a pair of crutches and told it would heal on its own in a few weeks. Five weeks later I was told by a friend that I really should go and see a physiotherapist.   I had self referred to the NHS but had heard nothing so had to go privately.   She said the hospital should have told me to only use the crutches for a couple of days, a week at maximum and that my muscle had healed too short.   I now need physio to get it back to normal.

Dear Crutches

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch. I’m sorry to hear of the continuing difficulties you are experiencing following your fall. It would be good to be able to give you some more specific feedback regarding you time at the New Vic Minor Injuries Unit, so if you would be kind enough to contact me,Carol-Ann Jamieson General Manger directly with some additional detail, I could do this. You can get me on or carol-ann.jamieon@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

Dear Crutches

Thank you for your post on Care Opinion.

I have checked with my colleagues in Physiotherapy and they have advised when we receive your self referral form, we add your referral to the physiotherapy waiting list based on your clinical need. The department may contact you if they need more information about your referral. When you reach the top of the waiting list we will send you a letter asking you to contact our booking centre to arrange an appointment. The booking centre may also phone you to offer an appointment especially if we have any cancellations. At the moment our waiting time for Physiotherapy at the New Victoria is around 12-13 weeks.

Kind Regards

Kevin
