"GP Phone Consultation"

About: Ardingly Court Surgery Practice Plus

(as the patient),

I just got off the phone with a GP for a consultation regarding a long-term problem with my hearing and tinnitus, and it was a very disappointing encounter with a GP who didn't listen, didn't seem to care, didn't read my patient notes/history even after I mentioned them, and ended the consultation within 2 min (I timed it).

My previous GP referred me to an ENT specialist for an ear problem after they couldn't find any type of infection.  At the time I had private insurance and saw an ENT consultant who did an assessment and MRI (to check for acoustic neuroma), and diagnosed me with severe hearing loss and extreme tinnitus.  They were unable to determine why I have hearing loss (thinking it was perhaps caused by a virus) but requested that I visit again in 6 mo. to see if things have improved or gotten any worse, and to potentially do another MRI.  I don't have private insurance anymore and now need an NHS referral.  I recently moved and all my paperwork from my previous GP  and the ENT consultant are on file with my new GP.

The helpful secretary at my new GP, who was great, suggested a phone consultation because it would be the fastest way to get a specialist referral and they said to mention that all the documents were in my file that the phone GP has access to.

The GP called me from a London landline in the morning during the scheduled time and asked for me to confirm my name and date of birth.  They then asked me to say what is wrong.  I began to explain the situation and was cut off to be asked again 'what is wrong?'.  I started to describe my first symptoms that led to the ENT assessment and my current symptoms (hearing loss and extreme tinnitus- no pain, no swelling or inflamation).  The GP cut me off to say I have to have an in person assessment with my GP to check that it's not ear wax build-up or an infection.  Then they hung up.  The entire call lasted 2 minutes and I didn't even catch their name; if they told me (?).

I now understand this is a service called Practice Assist run by Care Uk.

I am extremely frustrated and disappointed because this does not seem to me like a case of a doctor stretched by the demands of the job, rather this is a case of a doctor who didn't demonstrate any care, or desire to listen, and didn't even open my patient notes/history even after I referenced them several times.  My previous GP and the ENT consultant both have notes requesting a follow-up visit with the ENT, and if I was with my previous GP I would have been able to get a referral without another in-person GP visit.  It feels like my health journey  has been delayed by an 'ear-wax check' because the GP on the phone was lacked care and was uninterested in opening my file or in listening to me as a patient.  I am really disappointed and will not opt for GP consultation by phone again.  It is a service that only works if the doctor is willing to listen for more than 2 minutes.  If I knew the doctors name I would like to give feedback! I work with medical professionals and know that doctors are trained to be better!

We are sorry that you have had a bad experience with access to care on this occasion.

We are pleased that when you called Ardingly Court Surgery you found the secretary helpful and great, and that she arranged the agreed call with a GP. It is upsetting however that you found your consultation with the Practice Assist GP, who is not associated with Ardingly Court Surgery, less helpful. As part of our complaints system we will follow this up with Practice Assist with a view to ensuring patient contact with them is as helpful as it can be.

We understand that your comment has been left on the Care UK review page as well as ours and we are confident that they will reply on behalf of Practice Assist.

We hope that you will continue to find the service at Ardingly Court Surgery helpful.

Michael Lickiss

Interim Practice Manager
