"Thank You to CRU/HDU - Hammersmith Hospital"

I was recently discharged from Hammersmith hospital after a long stay in the CRU following major abdominal aortic surgery

Throughout my stay, I and my immediate family  who visited me regularly were able to appreciate how well managed and professional the Unit is. I had a rocky road to recovery but my every need was met quickly and efficiently by all the staff. For the first 6 weeks after the surgery whilst I had a tracheostomy I was unable to speak which made it difficult to communicate. Despite this everyone gave me the time to use my phone to type when I needed to ask about treatment or explain how I was feeling.

My surgeons and Doctors kept me regularly informed about treatment and clearly explained everything that needed to be done to improve my state of health. All of the nursing staff showed not just how professional and hard working they are but also how much they clearly enjoy their work. Each nurse I was introduced to at the start of a shift was polite and respectful but also whether through a cheery smile or words of encouragement when I felt concerned gave me such a boost to my mental state that felt as good as any medicine I was being given.

The team of Physiotherapis and occupational health workers quickly assessed my level of ability and listened carefully to my concerns and really gave me a sense of achievement when I gradually managed to overcome my mobility limitations.

Although it was a difficult and anxious time for me and my family we will always remember the dedication and friendliness of all the staff in the Unit. This experience of the NHS has not only cured a phobia I had of hospitals but shows how hard working the staff are and how well they work as a team even under pressure.
