"They simply don't have time"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Pre Operative Assessment University Hospital Hairmyres / Trauma & Orthopaedics (Wards 1 & 5)

(as the patient),

Hip replacement on a Tuesday evening discharged by Thursday lunchtime. Told by nurse in charge it was because they had been instructed to make bed spaces, other than that I wouldn’t be going home. Blood pressure was still low, feeling sick.

Pre care was fantastic, joint school wealth of information, anaesthetic team and surgeon wonderful. Post op care on the ward - seems to me that each shift of nurses are running at least two staff members short. The nurses can be short with the patients and they simply don’t have time to offer the best care anymore. Buzzers rung mean a delay in a nurse answering. I never did get my second TED stocking put on, my friend (retired nurse) did it at visiting.  The nursing staff must be so demoralised.

The consequence of this early discharge resulted in a visit to A&E 2 days later, sitting for 6 hours (not good after hip surgery) because of suspected infected wound. No one would answer the numbers given out for any further aftercare.  So unnecessary with proper on ward care until fully ready for home.

Dear Arr2019,

It is with great regret I read your patient opinion, relating to you feeling rushed to be discharged following your surgery, and you required to represent at ED 2 days later.

I would be grateful if you would give me a call to discuss this fully. I am the Senior Nurse responsible for the area.

My number is 01355585000, ext; 4664.

Many thanks

Kind Regards

Karen Phillips

Thank you Karen for taking the time to respond. I enjoyed our chat and fully understand the constraints you and your team have to work with.

Happy to say I am making good progress in my recovery. As I said you all do a great job under difficult circumstances.
