"Lack of dignity and respect"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - City Campus / Maternity care

(as the patient),

Without going into the whole birth details, during my cat 2 emcs I was treated with very little privacy and dignity. I wasn't asked consent for intimate procedures, that I feel definitely required consent.  Communication was awful. The midwife during the emcs was rude, lacked empathy and compassion and made us feel somewhat uncomfortable.

Some of the theatre staff were great, others however thought it was ok to perform personal care on me with no communication to let me know it was even going to happen, let alone ask consent. This was distressing and made me feel upset and ashamed. In result to this I've suffered mentally with what happened.    Working in healthcare myself, I know that consent, dignity, privacy and compassion are a must.

I'm now left fearful of extending my family, in case I end up with these same staff members again, and fearful I will go through the same experience again.  It feels such a shame to have such a negative experience for what should of been an amazing time.

I am grateful for your feedback, though sorry that you felt that your privacy and dignity was not maintained at all times and that this has resulted in you losing confidence in the care we provide. This is not how we would want any of our patients to feel; rather it is important to us that patients feel they are being treated with dignity and compassion at all times. I would welcome the chance to speak with you personally to listen to your concerns. If you wish to do so, you can contact me on 0115 9249924 ext 68460. I feel also you may benefit personally from what is called a 'birth debrief' - if you would like to do this, please contact me and I will pass your details on to my colleague who, as midwifery advocate, will support you in this.

Kind regards

Janine Kettle

Dear B1234

Further to my previous reply, unfortunately we are having some trouble with the phones in our area so you may not be able to contact me using the number given above. We would very much like to arrange a birth debrief for you if you would be willing, as we think this would be of great help to you. Please contact my colleagues in the patient experience team who will be happy to take your details; you can call them on 0115 924 9924 ext 66623.

Kind regards

Janine Kettle
