Permanent brain damage, huge life changes and having to deal with problems when accepting my health now is and has been hard enough.
I was at home, cooking and serving a Sunday meal for friends. I tripped and fell over a bannister, falling two metres height on to my head. I suffered a TBI and was hospitalised for a week in a specialist trauma unit. As part of my rehabilitation I was offered a series of sessions with a consultant neuro psychologist, Dr Lewis. Over a series of weeks Dr Lewis started to assess and unravel some of my thoughts and feelings about self by using a range of assessments and discussions. This has been useful to me as an opportunity for reflection, something I have not had the time or inclination for in a busy working and social life. I have reviewed some of my strengths and weaknesses. Some of these require attenuation and recognition, I am usually quite self critical. An unrelated medical complication has occurred concurrently which has created "an acute on chronic" scenario for me. Through discussion and reflection with Dr Lewis I really feel as though I have commenced a journey and feel more readily able to deal with some of the turbulence along the way. This has been an overall positive experience which will allow me to engage and enjoy life more so with a better sense of self.
