"Overall a frustrating and disappointing practice"

About: Stroud Green Medical Centre

There are good things about the practice - a great practice nurse who is sympathetic and efficient, an online appointment system which works. However the good is outweighed by a lot of negatives. It is unfortunately the worst GP practice I have been registered at (following 21 years in Scotland, 4 years in south London and 1 in Stoke Newington). The wait for an appointment is usually a minimum of 3 weeks, which is simply not fit for purpose as a service in 2019.The practice has no ability to do blood tests so for routine bloods you are sent to the Whittington hospital (25 from practice, 35 from our house) without an appointment. In my experience has involved 90 minute waits in a highly inconvenient location for an appointment which takes under 2 minutes and means almost half a day at work is taken up. The practice has an early morning clinic but it is clearly not sufficient for the population it serves because the waiting times are incredibly long for these appointments. There is no walk in service. There is only one female GP which for a lot of people/women means even longer waits if they want to see her. I have found that the advice given is often complacent and not tailored or interested. When I became pregnant for the first time this year I asked the GP for advice about local hospital provision. I was told "it doesn't matter because all hospitals are held to the same standard". This is obviously empty 'advice' with no thought given to it (and which is not the reality - CQC scores are different!), unfortunately emblematic of the attitude at the practice. The admin side is also really mixed - I have had (over 4.5 years) some really good experiences with both reception and with the admin side of the practice (referrals / letters etc) but have also had things simply not followed up and only after calling to chase something. The docs routinely do not have letters sent to their attention from hospital on file even when they are 1 or 2 months old (and when my patient copy has arrived without a problem so the original to the GP presumably did). The provision is N4 is extremely limited and for a lot of us in Stroud Green other practices refuse to register us as 'outside of catchment' (esp. anyone who is east of Stroud green road who then prohibited from accessing Andover / Islington practices but also Green Lanes practices to the east). This lack of choice for patients I think in part leads to the practice being able to give such poor service. It is a marked contrast to the genuinely helpful, patient focused NHS GP service I have always had elsewhere in London and in Scotland. You really don't feel that there is provision/care available when you need it, and you don't feel listened to when you do finally get an appointment. As I am having a baby soon I am concerned about the coverage my child will have then given the last 4.5 years of experience, and my own coverage pre and post natal - I am hoping to re-register elsewhere if it is possible.
