"SAU - Surgical Assessment Unit"

About: Lister Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I was sent to A&E upon referral from a doctor at the urgent care centre at the QE2.

When I arrived I was told I needed to go to SAU which was at another part of the hospital.

My time in the SAU ward was the most depressing,  unpleasant experience I have ever had the misfortune to have to use. The waiting area is two rooms where patients beds would have gone. There were  a few old uncomfortable chairs for people to use but not enough for everyone as three people were sat on the waiting room floor. The only toilets to use were in the same waiting room which is unpleasant as everyone else in the room can hear and smell everything going on in the toilet.

I arrived at 9:30am and wasnt seen until 3:00pm. The doctor said I needed antibiotics, I then had to sit back in the crowd waiting room where a nurse wheeled in a drip which I was going to have to take in front of everyone.  The nurse tried putting the antibiotics through my cannula but after the second failed attempt of putting the cannula in she pushed the antibiotics into my arm which made a large marble sized bubble under my skin and the pain was excruciating.

I then got seen by another doctor at 5:00pm, who said I need to have an operation but the hospital is full so there is no bed for me that night and i will have to return back again the next day at 7:00am

This was the worst experience I have ever gone through as the SAU is dark, uncomfortable and the waiting times are beyond ridiculous.  The whole experience has made me very worried and almost scared of ever being ill again incase I am sent to the SAU ward.
