"Screening question which needs reviewing"

About: St Mary's Hospital

I presented at my local A&E with pelvic pain and was subsequently referred to St Mary’s as I was 9 weeks pregnant. On arrival at ward 62? I was asked the routine questions: Could you please confirm your name, DOB, address and registered GP Practice. The question that followed huddled me a lot and I have been trying to understand the relevance of it. Were you born in this country? I was too much in pain to challenge this question but have since gone away and thought long and hard about it. I am not not sure why such a question would be of relevance. If I was not a woman of colour would I be asked a similar question? Hmm.. Are there different options for people born here or born somewhere else? Being a woman with a senior position in the NHS I think this question needs reviewing and rewording perhaps.

Thank you for your feedback. We were sorry to learn that your experience was not as positive as we would hope on Ward 62 at Saint Mary’s Hospital. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as an opportunity provided to the service to make changes and improvements wherever possible.

In response to your comment regarding the screening questions you were asked as part of your admission process, I can confirm that they are part of the standard admission process and all patients are asked the same set of questions. The Department of Health Overseas Charging Regulations place a legal obligation on all NHS Trusts, NHS Foundation Trusts and Local Authorities to establish whether a person is an overseas visitor to whom charges apply, or whether they are exempt from charges. Different responses will trigger a separate set of questions to provide the Trust with a full picture of our patient groups. The Trust receives patients from a diverse cultural background and Saint Mary’s Hospital sees the widest range of demographic backgrounds. By understanding how patients arrive with us, we can ensure our services are designed to meet the needs of all.

It is difficult to respond to all posts in a full way often because of a lack of detailed information, therefore if you would like to discuss your experience with us in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@mft.nhs.uk quoting reference number PO19-0103.
