"Staff were as helpful and kind as they had time to be"

About: Derriford Hospital / Neurosurgery

(as the patient),

I recently had neurosurgery and spent 3 nights on Moorgate Ward.  The staff were as helpful and kind as they had time to be.  It was only on my discharge day that I realised that they had been working with half the staff they should have had the whole time I was in there.  They do 12 hour shifts and on two of my three nights I know that neither the nurse nor the HCA got a break.

I find it really sad that people who go into the caring profession don't have the time to "care".

The care I witnessed/received from the staff was the absolute minimum which must hinder recovery of patients which in turn causes bed blocking. It is also dangerous, I had to call for help on more than one occasion for other patients that had pressed the buzzer but no one had arrived after 20 minutes.

On a personal note it is very frightening to wake up from an op with no one around to tell you if was successful or not and what all the needles etc are for. At no point during my stay was I even shown how to call for a nurse.

I felt really sorry for the staff, they were doing their best but it just wasn't good enough!

Sarah Foster, Ward Manager for Moorgate ward, has responded to say:

I am really sorry to hear that you had a poor experience whilst you were on Moorgate ward due to delays in answering you call bell and having to wait for periods of time for assistance, I can only apologise. I am unsure as to why when you were in the recovery area you woke up alone with no one to explain how your procedure went, as this would be for the recovery staff to answer.

I want to thank you for you kind words regarding the staff on Moorgate who do work tirelessly to provide the best care to all our patients even in difficult circumstances. I will pass your comments onto the team.

Best wishes

Sarah
