"How to get out of bed quickly in the morning"

About: Royal Lancaster Infirmary / Accident and emergency

I attended A&E on Friday 9th August with a large scald injury after knocking a litre of boiling water over myself from my bedside.

The scalded area had blistered, the larger ones pf which needed to be pierced.

At the end of the first visit the Advanced Nurse Practitioner told me she would be in the rest of that day & the following day so if I had any concerns I could ring for advice.

She also explained about the danger of infection & how that may present in the form of symptoms.

I found this reassuring & helpful.

An appointment was made for me to attend the Dressings Clinic the next Sunday but on the Saturday I had to ring in due to my wound leaking copiously & was told to go in then for a dressings change.

Even though it was very busy in A&E that afternoon I was again treated quickly with care & compassion.

After the initial visit I had to return to the Dressings Clinic every 2 days at first, then every 3 days, with a couple of extra trips in for unplanned dressings changes.

This was because the area of the burn was an awkward one so it was difficult to keep the dressings in place & intact when I moved.

There was some talk after the first couple of days about perhaps having to go to Preston for further treatment.

Happily this wasn't necessary.

I consider the treatment I received at RLI to be exemplary - I was in good, safe hands & was pleased to hear people introducing themselves with Kate Granger's, "Hello my name is..."

Even when obviously working under great pressure staff combined their expertise with compassion, empathy, humour, dignity, kindness & respect.

They worked effectively as a team with well communicated handovers.

I was impressed that the Advanced Nurse Practitioner introduced me to her ANP colleague when she knew she wouldn't be in for the next dressing change so there was efficient continuity of care. The special dressings used on my wound are antimicrobial & help burns heal but even so I am impressed with the speed at which my wound has healed & the soreness dissipated.

Only 13 days after my accidental injury further dressings changes are to be done now by the nurses at my GP's surgery & it seems likely I won't have a scar.

Huge & grateful thanks to all involved in my care.
