"I've had the best of care"

About: Ayrshire & Arran Community Services / Elderly Community Mental Health Service Crosshouse Hospital / Geriatric Assessment Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Rheumatology Woodland View / Elderly Mental Health

(as a service user),

I retired in 1996. My husband retired in 2000. Almost immediately he started his lollipop job which he did up until his 80th birthday. 2011 my husband had an aneurism operation located in the back wall of stomach where he had a stent put in. By this time he had been diagnosed as having vascular dementia. He was still able to carry on his lollipop job for a couple of years & drive. By then doctor advised he should retire on his 80th birthday. By this time he had developed cellulitis in both legs. He also had carer to administer tablets. Laterly he had carers morning & tea time. Over the last 8 years I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis & high blood pressure. In early 2018 Tom's dementia condition worsened that by May he had turned violent towards me & family. We had to call 24 hour doctor and after discussion the doctor said Tom had to go to hospital for tests. Tom was admitted to Crosshouse for scans which showed that he had cancer in 3 places.

He was admitted to Crosshouse for 7 weeks then moved long term to Woodlands View Irvine. Meantime, my husband's condition took its toll on my health that my daughter phoned Crisis North Ayrshire and Social Services took over. I had carers 3 times a day & a team of therapist nurses come to house. Carers, therapy team were wonderful after I've been referred to Inverclyde I was found to have rheumatoid arthritis which I've apparently had undetected for years as well as osteoarthritis for 8 years. Carers were great with my husband & also NHS Staff.

Tom passed away December 2018. I've had the best of care these last seven months & continue to have same.

Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to share your experience and I would like to take this opportunity to convey my heartfelt sympathy to you and your family on the loss of your much loved husband.

From what you have told us, the last few years must have been a very difficult and distressing time for you both but it was heartening to hear that you have felt supported by caring, compassionate staff, both at home and in the hospital setting.

We are very grateful to you for your kind and thoughtful comments, which the staff will be delighted to receive.

with all best wishes,

Linda

Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences with us. On behalf of the service I would be grateful if you and your family would accept our condolences on the loss of your husband.

It can be extremely saddening and difficult when a loved one becomes ill and caring for them can impact on the health of their spouse. It appears to have been a difficult past few years for you all however I am delighted that the care and support you and your late husband received over the past 7 months was delivered by kind, caring and compassionate staff. I hope that you will continue to get the support you need and that your health has improved.

Your kind and thoughtful comments will be shared will all staff involved which they will gratefully receive.

With our best wishes

Karen
