"The care I received"

About: Lochaber (Belford) Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as the patient),

I am an Australian tourist visiting Scotland. I had rashly decided to go for a walk with my girlfriend near Mallaig in the pouring rain along a loch. The ground was extremely boggy, the rain torrential, and i lost sight of the track. As I was going along the general direction of where I thought the track was headed, I tried to climb a 6 foot fence. In the rain, I slipped and fell and broke my wrist quite badly. My girlfriend and I managed to trek back to our accommodation (which I was really only able to do because I was in shock). We then got a lift to the hospital in Fort William courtesy of our super nice and helpful host, Michael, and his daughter, a trainee paramedic.

After a short wait in the waiting room, the staff put me at ease, x-rayed me and told me what they could see was wrong with my arm. I was extremely anxious and still in shock, and my girlfriend was also quite worried about how anxious I was, but the staff were very professional and did their best to put me at ease and made me feel comfortable. Despite the severity of the break, they also managed to force my broken wrist back into position, while I was under local anaesthetic. As a result, what could have been a terrible break should now be a clean heal (though that conclusion is pending an X-ray and a discussion with an orthopaedic specialist in a couple days). Given the state I was in, the doctors (my doctor’s name was Claire I think, and my x-ray specialist was Tracey) were extremely good with me and very attentive to my concerns. They also made sure to give me a copy of my medical report, and told me to get my x-rays when I go to Inverness. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to Belford Hospital!
