I ended up on the cardiothoracic ward after several days of intensive treatment for my lung infection. Sadly I had not responded well to the IV antibiotic treatment despite everyones best efforts. I was lucky enough to be in the care of two Consultants and many others who undertook my multiple CT scans, tried to identify the bugs in Microbiology and kept me fed , watered and made me laugh. From the guy who made my morning coffee on Osler ward to the Consultant Thoracic Surgeon for her amazing surgical skills that treated my lung. Eventually ,clearly the decision was made that I needed urgent surgical intervention. I had always been told by my respiratory doctors that this was a possibility and had been introduced to the cardiothoracic consultant early on during my stay. Although I was starved as surgery was now looking more likely , the decision was made within 5 minutes and I was off to the theatre. I was never scared or felt uninformed as from the moment I had been admitted I felt safe, included , consulted and that everyone was determined to restore my health as quickly as possible. I definitely felt part of an expert team that was going to make me better. Post op on the ward I felt greatly comforted by the nurses . Their professional approach to my pain relief, and general care delivered with such kindness was really a big boost to my speedy recovery. Within 4 days my tubes were out and I was home. I looked forward to seeing the Consultant Thoracic Surgeon and her team every day on the cardiothoracic ward as they checked all was going well and that we could have a joke along the way. I have had a horrible illness and it changed my life significantly for a while but within 3 months I returned to work. I am well and enjoying life now . Just a massive thank you to you all, I have tears in my eyes typing this only because its hard to believe that so many special individuals are all under the one roof at the John Radcliffe all performing daily miracles. I was just one of them.
