"Refusal of a cataract operation"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

I was referred to Boston Pilgrim Hospital by my Opticians who told me that I was 'borderline to drive'. After the usual two hour wait to be seen, a Medical Professional told me that, sadly, it was unlikely that my cataract would be considered for such an operation, i.e. lens replacement in my right eye.  This staff member seemed genuinely sorry that the treatment would not take place on this occasion.

My previous appointment, for the left eye,  was with Boston West but like the Pain Management section urgently needed by my Wife for her broken spine, I understand Ramsey Group have been removed from the NHS procedures, presumably for financial reasons.

Thank you for sharing your story with us. We're sorry to learn that cataract surgery is not an option for your other eye. We would strongly recommend that you visit your GP to see what options are available and they will be able to explain why it is not possible to operate on your eye.

I wonder who gets the last word on my ability to drive; is it the Police or the NHS?

Hi

I'm not an expert so I can't answer that question for you but if you look at https://www.gov.uk/health-conditions-and-driving it provides further information on health conditions that affect driving and an assessing fitness to drive: guide for medical professionals
