I had a breakdown due to stress at work and a toxic relationship. I had negative thoughts and a self-deprecating mindset as well as unhelpful coping strategies to deal with situations. After waiting for therapy I was given an online CBT course and a therapist who was very professional and supportive. This course of treatment did not work for me so I was placed back on the waiting list and was given another therapist for 1:1 CBT.
With my therapist, we spent 3 months working through many issues. I was listened to effectively. I felt my point of view was understood. We focused on what was important to me. My feelings were accepted without judgement. Conversation was comfortable and flowing. My counsellor fostered a safe and trusting environment. My lead was followed during our sessions whenever appropriate. My counsellor provided leadership during our sessions when it was appropriate. My counsellor challenged me when it was appropriate. These sessions helped me with what originally led me to seek counselling: anxiety, low self-esteem, depression etc. I feel more positive in my outlook as a result of my counselling as it was positive and encouraging. I have learnt useful patterns of thinking and strategies to keep a positive mindset. I am happy with the service provided by my counsellor. Based on my experience, I would recommend my counsellor and IAPT to others.
