"Too few staff, inefficient prescribing procedures"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Medical Oncology

(as a relative),

Service could be better. In recent weeks my wife has been required to attend Oncology Outpatients at Wishaw University Hospital following which she receives injections for cancer treatment at the Oncology Day Paitients Department. On the last two occasions, the attention from Oncology Pharmacy has been particularly unsatisfactory and she has been left sitting about for up to two hours waiting for the prescribed medication to be made available from the pharmacy to the medical staff. On a previous occasion, when I personally attended at the Pharmacy to uplift a prescription on an matter unrelated to this treatment, there was no one present as all the staff had gone for a tea break.

The situation with the Pharmacy is either compounded by too few staff, inefficient prescribing procedures or disinterest, and I hope it is not the latter.

The service and level of care from Oncology medical and nursing staff and those at Reception is second to none. Why cannot Oncology Pharmacy be the same?

Dear Irritated relative

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience during the attendance with your wife to the Oncology clinic at University Hospital Wishaw. I am pleased to hear that the service and level of care from the Oncology Medical, Nursing and Reception staff have been second to none. However, I am also grateful for you taking the time to highlight the areas that are not working well within your wife's care.

I am saddened to hear that on the last 2 occasions both you and your wife have experienced areas of care that have been unsatisfactory. This is not what we would expect. I will share your feedback with the Pharmacy Department to help understand why this was the case and ensure procedures are reviewed.

To help with the review further and with your wife's permission I would be grateful if you could get in contact with myself on 01236 712333 to get some more information to help improve and enable pharmacy to review the whole process.

Warmest Regards

Lynn
