"Broken Toes with an open wound..."

About: Halton Hospital Warrington Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a service user),

Having been evaluated and X rayed in Halton (3 hours) I was informed I needed to travel to Warrington A&E  to see Obstetrics for further checks and possible treatments. I was told not too eat or drink as blood work and/or ECG data may be required. I had not consumed food or drink since 9am so this was uncomfortable.

Arriving at Warrington, I was admitted via reception and told to wait, I asked if there was a possibility of speaking to a nurse or doctor to determine a waiting period and to see if I could drink water if possible. I was told to wait and someone would come shortly. 60 minutes later I walked out after telling the receptionist I wasn't prepared to wait any longer.

At 21:30 a nurse called me to ask where I was, a doctor then told me that I needed antibiotics due to sepsis infection being acquired whilst waiting for an inspection.

I fully appreciate that hospital staff are very busy with differing levels of patient care, I also fully understand that patients may need to await treatments or consultation. What I find distressing and unacceptable is the lack of concern and COMMUNICATION for patients sitting in a busy waiting room unsure of their condition and their vulnerability. A simple 2 minute conversation with a nurse to explain where and what was to be expected would have alleviated my concerns and I might have been able to remain in situ until called. Now I am at home, worried about my condition and if in fact I will have contracted sepsis having been exposed whilst in the environment of the hospital.
