"No pain relief for *6hrs* - Rapid MAU"

About: University Hospital Of North Tees

I was sent by Ambulance, by a VERY worried GP, to Rapid MAU. The Nursing staff were very kind, professional & understanding. It was clear I was very poorly with a complication [from a failed routine procedure] causing terrible head/neurological symptoms. After my initial observations & history being taken, via a friend as I could hardly speak, I was left with no means of contacting staff (eg buzzer) if I felt worse or needed further assistance. I HAD to lay flat, due to condition, with covered eyes [severe light sensitivity]. Staff didn’t seem to routinely check on patients’ needs (eg nausea or toilet) and, had a friend not stayed with me for the duration, I’d have been in tremendous difficulties. Sadly, we were not kept up to date with the plan/what was going on. Some reassurance & apologies for delays etc would’ve gone a long way. It was 4hrs before I saw a wonderful, helpful & very understanding Dr but then a further 2hrs before I received the FIRST dose of pain relief since arrival. The Rapid MAU is, obviously, not purpose built (a converted ? Physio Gym) but it may be an idea to have a commode or two for those users too poorly to tolerate a wheelchair, to the facilities.
