"Unprofessional staff and lack of dignity"

About: Croydon University Hospital / Accident and emergency

I took my mom to Croydon university hospital on 3rd of August after she collapsed at home. While my sister and I was in the room she was having an ecg performed by a health care assistant another staff who was already in the room told me and my sister that we need to leave the room because he want to take bloods from a Male patient. This is at the same time my mother was having the ecg and in the same room. When he was challenged about this, his reply was that management is aware. It did not end there but she had waited 4 hours for pain medication after reporting pain more severely in her hip post fall. The first time I asked for pain medication for her the nurse said it is not her responsibility and I need to find the triage nurse who saw her and ask for pain medication. This is when she was already assigned to majors. When I went to the admin staff after her Xray to confirm that is where she needed to wait, she was so abrupt and didn't even bother to look up to make eye contact.I think just as they have secret shoppers, they need to have secret patients because our experience yesterday made the waiting time even more painful. She was not offered anything to drink or eat within the 6 hours there. And I don't want the excuse that A+E is a busy place because I have being to even more busy A+E where they are no beds and patients waiting in corridors but despite this they are not having two opposite sex in one room at the same time. Also the staffs are approachable and pleasant and they update you on what is happening or how far you are in your care. This was not the case at Croydon hospital. It is understandable you will be waiting when you go to A+E but having pleasant staff and maintaining dignity goes a far way.

I am very sorry that you and your mum did not have a good experience. We have a single sex policy so please can you contact me directly, so that I can investigate further?

Kind Regards

Hilary Frayne
