"They didn't move an inch to help"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Ear, Nose and Throat

(as a carer),

This afternoon whilst waiting for my friend having a scan at City Hospital campus, I started chatting with a patient waiting for a taxi back to Ward C25 at QMC. His nursing associate accompanying him on his cross city trip for the scan, sat reading a magazine and flicking through their phone throughout. The content of the conversation SHOULD have alerted them to the emotions present, but no, they managed to keep focused on their phone and mag throughout.

When the patient began coughing up blood, the staff member didn't move an inch, as I got up to fetch their patient paper towels to catch the blood and protect his dignity.

I can look at them all I like, they said. "If you want to do it (look after their patient) you do it. I'm a patient escort. I don't do that."

This person is employed by QMC, and the people responsible who work on Ward C25, should be ashamed of themselves.

Magnet nursing Excellent patient care?

A disgrace to the NHS cancer services.

I’m desperately disappointed and sorry to read that this happened to one of our patients. I would welcome the opportunity to talk to you so that we can get more details and properly look into what happened so that we can learn from this and take action where needed. If you would like to do this you can contact me directly on 0115 924 9924 ext 64127.

Kind regards

Kirstie Kirton
Deputy Matron, ENT
