"Sunday evening A&E visit- foreign body in the eye"

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital / Accident and emergency

My husband got some brick dust stuck in his eye which wouldn’t wash out. As the dust stuck in the pupil of his eye we made the journey to royal berks. There was a full waiting room and a slight queue but we were seen within a few minutes to check in. Within 15 minutes we were triaged by a really friendly male nurse who was speedy and efficient but thorough. We were advised a nurse practitioner would see us and check in his eye. We took our seats back in the hot waiting room and within an hour were called through to the much cooler treatment side by a Consultant (per his scrubs). He was friendly and took us to the eye room where he could take a proper look. He quickly established what had happened and advised he would add drops to numb the eye and then drops of contrast to show up any damage to the eye. He told my husband it may sting, passed him tissue to wipe his face in the event of and excess eye watering and gently began his exam, explaining what he was doing and looking for as he went . The consultant was really thorough and explained he had a scratched cornea and would need antibiotic drops prophylactically and that his eye would feel sore and irritated. He explained what we could expect and also let us know about the RBH eye casualty as a safety net (open office hours) if in a day or 2 he still had any problems. We left with medication, completely reassured and very happy with the experience overall. The receptionist, the triage nurse and the treating consultant couldn’t have been friendlier and more willing to help. Big thank you to them all.

Many thanks for the review of your recent visit to the Emergency Department. Matron will pass on your comments to the team as it is always good to receive positive feedback. We hope your husband's eye is recovering well.
