"Waiting time and cancellations"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Rheumatology

(as the patient),

Nearly 3 years ago I was referred to Rheumatologist with back issues. It was decided I would have yearly appointments. In 2018 I saw a different Rheumatologist from previous year. They were excellent and very thorough. At that appointment is was discussed I would have yearly MRI scan just prior to appointment so that we could discuss the images and sort out best action moving forward.  At the end of the appointment I had secured a new appointment date for August 2019 and would be going for MRI before that.

Earlier this year I recieved a letter to say my appointment was cancelled. So I waited a few months for new letter to come but it didn't. I called referral management centre today to enquire when my appointment would be. I was informed that my original rheumatologist had left and the consultant I saw last year was only filling in for that consultant. I will not get an appointment now until a new consultant starts.

Find this really frustrating as I only see the rheumatologist once per year and looks now I wont see anyone at all this year. I've now been diagnosed with a foot condition and was looking forward to discussing this issue to help me get my life back on track as its affecting me to the point that I'm currently off work.

Dear Pixie dust

Thank you for sharing your less than perfect experience on Care Opinion. I can sense your frustration in your post (and I share them) and I can only apologise for what you have been put through, this is far from ideal and clearly isn't acceptable.

We have had a vacancy within this specialty for some time which we have been able to cover with locum Consultants. I am pleased to say we have recently secured a Consultant Rheumatologist who has worked with us previous therefore this will assist the service to get back on track.

I am happy to look into your particular circumstances with the medical management team who will be more than happy to talk through with you. If you would like me to do this please could you contact my PA, Ms Tracy Scott on: 01292 617126 or e-mail on tracy.scott@aapct.scot.nhs.uk who will be able to take your details.

Once again, please accept my sincere apologies for the frustration you have experienced.

John
