"Wait and see"

About: Bromley Healthcare / Occupational Therapy for Children GPs in Bromley

(as a parent/guardian),

I have been trying to obtain some kind of support beyond “monitoring” and what feels like the excuse of “wait and see”.

My eldest child was 2 when I first raised my concerns and he is now 6. He struggles with handwriting, self-care, self-regulation, he is behind in school and has anxiety yet everyone appears to believe he is “fine.”

He refuses to go to school most days, has sensory issues and refuses to use the bathroom in school yet the occupational therapist that saw him after waiting for two years seems he does not need any intervention or support.

He comes home constipated and in full meltdown mode all because he won’t eat the food because of textures. How is a child supposed to learn anything when he’s hungry, desperate to use the bathroom because he is either shy or feels he cannot ask anyone to help him clean himself. Doesn’t take sunscreen because he cannot handle the texture nor open and apply it himself for gross motor issues. Yet his situation is not severe enough for an assessment beyond recapping twice a year to the doctor what every day is like?

He doesn’t sleep properly at night, we are almost always late to school and I have two other children who are younger than him that equally require care.

My youngest child, global developmental delay and still side by side play, doesn’t interact at times non-verbal and also seems to have sensory issues.

My children have a right to an education and to access it at a level that meets their individual capability. The neglect, at this level is purely because the staff fail to realise what my children's limitations are.

Just because they don’t appear to be severe it doesn’t not mean they don’t exist. That in itself is a form of discrimination.
