"Lack of communication and long waiting"

About: Kettering General Hospital / Gynaecology

My wife and I are on a, seemingly, long journey to understand why we haven't conceived yet.

After many tests defined by our GP and a small operation for my wife, we have now finally been referred to the Infertility Clinic.

We were sent a letter on 21st June to book an appointment but, having called the booking line on 21st June, we were told to wait for a pack to arrive that could take up to six weeks - when asked what this pack is, the lady said didn't know.

So we wait for this pack, not knowing what it is or what our next steps are.

At a time when we could really use some clarification on the process and a timeframe for how things will take to move along, we find ourselves, as we have been throughout the last year, still in the dark.

Please could this be made more clear - we face the frustration every day of what may or may not happen and a clear understanding of the process may go some way to helping.

I am sorry you have felt unhappy with your referral to the fertility clinic. I am unable to comment on your experience prior to that, but generally once you call the appointment centre with a fertility referral from your GP, you would be advised that a pack will be sent out to you within 6 weeks. This pack is an information letter with the fertility department contact details on, an explanation of the process from here including time frames and a request for any required further screening tests with relevant forms enclosed. In reality, we are nearly always able to get this paperwork out to you well within the 6 weeks quoted, but that date is given as an agreed failsafe date to ensure that no couples are left waiting longer than this without correspondence from us.

I would very much hope that you and your wife should have received this by now as we do not currently have any outstanding referrals from the date you quote but if not please do let me know. Please do also feel free to contact me directly if there is any further information I can provide to make your referral process with us a more positive one. I can be contacted on 01536 492872.

I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Kind regards

Sarah Munn – Fertility Clinical Nurse Lead
