"Services need improving"

About: The Royal London Hospital / Maternity

I was admitted onto ward 6E with pregnancy complications. The staff on this ward were absolutely fantasti. They seemed to really enjoy their job and this reflected in their everyday practice. I had to spend a long time on this ward and got to know the workers very well. I was asked regularly if i was ok and staff were always cheerful. I had a C section which went well, was a very frightening experience but the consultant and workers put me at ease with their kind words and distractions. Everything then changed when I got to ward 6F. I was refused help to go to the toilet on the morning after my C section, baring in mind I hadn’t got up out of bed by myself yet so was very frightened to do this by myself, I was told NO by one of the workers and that I had to get up and do it myself. This worker then said “ come on I’ve had a C section before you can do it by yourself”. This made me feel very vulnerable and upset. Whilst on the toilet I had to change my pad I was very sore from operation and the worker said she will show me where to put the old pad.the worker then left the room and didn’t come back knowing that i needed some support. That same day nobody asked me if I was ok and needed any help due to not being able to move much. My baby was also in intensive care and I was feeling pretty vulnerable at this point. I had blood on my gown and I was told that I have to wear my own clothes baring in mind I could hardly move and was still bleeding quite heavily. After coming back from intensive care to visit my new born my partner explained to the workers on reception that I had missed my medication and needed it as I was in pain. 3 hours later I received my medication at this point I became extremely upset and I was apologised to and midwife said that she had been on her break and that the message wasn’t passed on. This is extremely unacceptable! Some of the workers are extremely kind supportive and helpful whilst others look like they are really not enjoying their job at all. Some of them never smile, are extremely rude and you can feel the atmosphere and tension on some days. My baby was loosing a little weight and a nursery nurse said to me that their is no excuse as to why baby shouldn’t be finishing his feed put the milk in a jug and tipped it into my babies mouth whilst he was sleeping. Pulled the curtain back and put my babies cot in front of window and said that he needed light. I found this to be quite forceful and gave me a feeling that I wasn’t doing my job as a mother properly. I complained to Midwife and she apologised again sounding very robotic.

An apology isn’t going to solve anything I needed support reassurance I felt judged. I went to collect some fresh Bed sheets and put away some dirty ones I said “ hello to staff on reception and was met with no eye contact I asked if I could get cot shot sheet and they said Yh and Pointed to the trolley their eyes glued to the computer screen at all times.
