"Rude, Unhelpful and Inaccessible"

About: Blackwater Medical Centre

My experience dealing with the Blackwater Medical Centre just hit a new low. After waiting on hold for nearly three quarters of an hour to get an appointment (I wish they had some more variety in the terrible music they blare at you), I got to the surgery about 5 minutes late, partly due to traffic and partly because of my dyspraxia, a specific learning disability which affects my ability to keep time and to organise myself. Since the GPs here regularly run very late, and I personally have had to wait for more than half an hour longer than my appointment time, I did not think this would be a serious problem. I was wrong. The receptionist I spoke to (who appears in many other reviews) was spectacularly rude in telling me that my lateness (exaggerated by them) meant my appointment had been cancelled, as if I had somehow chosen not to be on time as a kind of insult to them specifically. Additionally, a temporary transfer form which I had filled in the previous week had not been processed, and the same receptionist told me first that I hadn't filled it in at all (I had; it was in a pigeonhole behind them) and then that I hadn't filled it in right– presumably because nobody had advised me on how to fill it in and because I have a learning difficulty that makes this sort of thing very difficult. They were again incredibly rude and patronising, making insulting comments about my handwriting (another feature of my disability), and treated me like a badly-behaved and stupid child when I am an adult who happens to be disabled by exactly this kind of thoughtless and excluding behaviour. I felt like crying or shouting at them, but because I was taught how to speak to other humans politely I managed to remain composed and polite. Having passed through all this public humiliation, I asked whether I could now book an appointment. I was told to go and call the automated phone line again tomorrow– because the 45 minutes I'd previously spent on the line were clearly not enough! I had booked the appointment as a review of my anti-anxiety medication, which has almost completely run out: I'm definitely going to need a lot more after dealing with this lot. A broader point needs to be made as to how bad the Blackwater Medical Centre is at accommodating people with 'invisible disabilities' i.e. Autism Spectrum Conditions, Specific Learning Difficulties and mental illnesses. Their online and electronic systems are opaque and inaccessible, their staff are rude and unhelpful and their overall setup seems almost designed to exclude people who need the most help navigating it. I have been seeing GPs in an Oxford practice while studying there, and seeing how competent, professional and courteous they are has made me realise how unlucky I am that Blackwater Medical Centre is my local source of healthcare.

It is very difficult to investigate complaints from anonymous patients please write with your concern to the practice.
