I was a visitor with my father, who was admitted @7pm on 22/5/2019 for Leukaemia treatment and needed chemo and a stem cell transplant . Prior to admission onto ward 625, my dad had to have a platelets transfusion, which left his throat feeling really sore. I politely asked one of night nurses if he could have some water (even offering to get it for him myself) to which she replied bluntly 'No, I'm too busy!' then she just ignored me and turned away from me!. I thought this was extremely rude and disgusting that a simple thing like 'water' was refused!.....unbelievable!!. Then when I left things just got worse, he started bleeding everywhere & had to go looking for nurses leaving a trail of blood everywhere as none of the staff came when he kept pressing the emergency button!. On a positive note......the specialists were amazing and very informative and a few nurses were lovely and had a great personality.......they made up for the rude, miserable disinterested nurses!. Judging by the good reputation this hospital has I have to say that I was really quite disappointed overall with the service my father had, he really started to get aggitated and lose trust in care he was receiving, which is quite sad really.

It is disappointing to hear that your father was not able to access water when he needed it and that his emergency button was not answered when he needed help. We are sorry that some aspects of his experience were so negative. Senior staff are keen to listen to your concerns in more detail and to take any necessary action. For this to happen please make contact with the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS). PALS are here to help and can be contacted by phone 0121 371 4400, by email PALS@uhb.nhs.uk, via the hospital website www.uhb.nhs.uk/pals-form or in person by dropping in between 9am – 5pm (Mon-Fri) to the PALS office located near the Information Desk in the main entrance of the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
