"Lovely staff but need a better waiting area"

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital / Upper gastrointestinal sugery

(as the patient),

I had a gastroscopy in May 2019 at Bournemouth Hospital - a quick referral.

The staff were so helpful, focused and professional albeit a very busy department. I felt as though I was in good hands. Unfortunately my only problem was I felt quite confined in a small waiting room with no fresh air or windows and quite full of patients. Due to the fact because of my procedure you cannot drink and having to wait longer being so busy I got dehydrated and wasn't feeling so good (I would mention I have had this procedure before so wasn't worried about it) however, because of the dehydration my blood pressure was 200 and the nurse who was an angel had trouble getting my line in my arm and was told once in the procedure room if my blood pressure didn't come down they may have to stop which would have been very disappointing.

My previous gastroscopy experience was waiting in an airy ward and waiting time much better. So this is something that has declined and I would not want to experience my feeling of dehydration again - a better waiting room and more staff so you don't have to wait so long without water (also a dangerous high blood pressure through no fault of my own) also the staff not so rushed off their feet. I thank them all very much

Dear Maegaret

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us and sorry to hear that on this occasion your blood pressure rose to such high levels making you feel unwell.

We appreciate you highlighting the professionalism and helpfulness of the staff looking after you during your procedure, I know they will value your praise.

I have spoken with the Sister to make her aware of your comments regarding the waiting area and how you feel this was one of the factors in making you feel unwell and she has asked me to share the following response:

“We apologise that you felt the waiting areas are small and confined causing you to feel unwell, we try to make these areas as comfortable as possible whist’s aiming to maintain patient’s privacy and dignity during their visits to Endoscopy.

Due to the nature of the department we do have a number of treatment rooms in operation at any one time carrying out a variety of different procedures and while we aim to keep waiting times as short as possible by inviting patients in at different, staggered appointment times, on occasion lists can be delayed due to emergencies within the hospitals”.

We hope, despite feeling unwell during your visit, the results of your procedure were encouraging and you now feel much better.

Regards

Patient Experience Team
