"My husband's visit to the eye department"

About: Golden Jubilee National Hospital / Ophthalmology Outpatients

(as other),

My husband recently had a cataract operation, preceded by a visit to the eye department. He was delighted with all aspects of his care.

However, I had to accompany him to both the preliminary appointment and on the day of his operation, and I am extremely phobic about anything to do with eyes so this was quite a challenge for me. My experience  on the first visit was made a lot worse by numerous posters on display in the eye department with illustrations of various èye conditions etc, which I  could not bear to look at. This made the visit much more difficult for me, even though I wasn't a patient, and I  can't think that it would be very reassuring for patients either. My husband will be returning to have the other eye operated on, but I dread having to try and avoid seeing these pictures. Would it be possible to replace them with pictures more likely to put patients and other visitors into a more relaxed state of mind? If patients need or want to view these posters, they could be made available in booklet form.

Dear Scaredicat,

Thank you for posting your comments onto Care Opinion. I am very pleased to read that your husband was delighted with all aspects of his care however, I was saddened to read of your phobia and experience.

After reading your post I visited the Ophthalmology department and spoke with some patients and relatives about the posters. The feedback overall was positive however I appreciate with your phobia you find these particularly distressing. We will share your comments with the staff in the area and continue to monitor people’s views on the information and consider how we display this. It is a fine balance to try and display information in a way that is accessible to all.

If it would help you, when your husband is coming back to the GJNH for his second eye we could arrange for someone to meet you at reception and escort him to and from the Ophthalmology department. If you wish to do this, please advise the booking team of this when your husband receives his appointment letter.

Best wishes,

Paula
