"Blood test"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter (3) needed a blood test. I was very nervous as she has never had one before. We had been prescribed numbing cream by the doctor so I had already applied that an hour previous and covered it in cling film. When we arrived she played in the waiting room play area for 5 minutes and then we were called in. The nurse took off all the cling film and cleaned all the cream off and spoke to her the whole time making her laugh. She found a vein she wanted and positioned my daughter on my lap in a way that meant she could take the blood without my daughter seeing. The other nurse gave us a book which we sat and read while they got to work behind us taking the blood. My daughter didn’t even flinch and it was over within a minute, maybe even less! They popped on a plaster and gave her a sticker and we were done! No tears, no stress, just a happy child and her blood ready to be tested.

Thank you for telling us of your daughter's experience when having a blood test. It was really good to hear there were no dramas... just a happy child and parent at the end of the procedure. We strive to make the whole procedure from arriving to leaving as stress free as possible for both the child and the family and are mindful that having a blood test can be scary for children. Our aim is for the child and family to leave the department happy with a good outcome so if they ever had to return they would not be worried.

Many thanks
