"Bowel Cancer Screening"

About: Airedale General Hospital / Colorectal surgery

(as the patient),

When you turn 55 you will be invited to attend a clinic at your local hospital for a bowel scope screening to check for cancer. At first there seems plenty to worry about; not just the procedure at the hospital but first you have to do your own enema before you leave home (a first for me).

To get to the point, it was only about 20% as bad as I expected. I won't be doing self-enemas on a regular basis but the process is straightforward, and the staff at Airedale hospital, from reception right through to the nurse who gives the final results, were excellent and supportive.

About as much fun as a visit to the dentist, but for the same reasons completely worthwhile. I would urge anyone invited to these clinic to attend, it is worth it.
