"A GP appointment that did not go well for myself"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire

(as the patient),

I have longterm multiple illnesses and health conditions which are extremely complicated causing impacts on my daily living and quality of life.

I suffer severe pain daily, and discomfort continuously, all due to chronic rare skin conditions, combined with fibromyalgia and depression with terrible anxiety along with continuous worry about my situation I or no one seems to be able to help or support me very well with everything combined.

My latest GP appointment, which was not with my regular GP,was in no other words but severely disappointing when I have recently had a nasty injury to my left knee and right ankle caused by a fall(on top of what I'm already trying to cope with)I felt the doctor I seen showed signs of ignorance and negligence for me to come away feeling patronised with a sticky note with the name of something I am diagnosed with named 'neuro dermatitis'.

I asked the doctor if they knew what this was and they shrugged their shoulders while googling this for me, then said, you can look it up!

Then when I'm explaining the pain I suffer which disturbs my sleep, and mental illness becomes even more intense. I was told people have to just learn to deal with pain!

I feel I've not been taken seriously or been shown any compassion or understanding regarding how I am really suffering and mental health is genuinely deteriorating in relation to all of this.

Dear Kezp609,

I'm sorry to hear of your experience when attending your appointment; you are clearly trying to cope with and manage a range of complex issues and it's important that you are given good information to make informed choices regarding treatment and that you are signposted to the correct services available for support. I'd recommend you consider asking for an appointment with another doctor to discuss your deteriorating mental health, or visit www.elament.org.uk which is Lanarkshire's first stop for online mental health and wellbeing, providing information for people seeking assistance with mental health problems.

GP practices are independent contractors and are responsible for investigating and responding to any concerns someone might have about their service; you could speak to the Practice Manager to let them know how you feel following the appointment.

Whilst the doctor referred you to "Google", I'd recommend NHSinform as your first port of call; this is Scotland's nhs information service providing quality assured health information www.nhsinform.scot including sections on mental health, skin, hair and nails and muscle, bone and joints.

I wish you well with your ongoing recovery for your knee and ankle injury and please see if you can access support to help you cope with your mental health.

Kind regards

Rick
