"Late night emergency care"

About: Victoria Hospital / Admissions Unit 1 (Emergency Medical) Victoria Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

On Wednesday at 2 a.m i attended out of hours, i was seen by Martyn who was a lovely and kind man. He ran some tests and it was discovered that i had an infection, so i was sent to admissions unit 1 for further tests.

I was in admissions for all of Wednesday and during my time here i received an ultrasound and a CT scan. These scans showed that i had a very large kidney stone and as a result of this my kidney was enlarged and had an infection (the one that was discovered earlier).

I received I.V fluids and I.V antibiotics to help fight the infection and the staff were wonderful, they were very attentive to my reactions when the cannulas were first put in and comforted me during the most nippy bits.

I slept the majority of the first day, and when i had to be woken up to have my vitals checked the staff were amazing, they were patient and gentle with me and did their work quickly with little disruption so i could go back to sleep.

I had a visit from Mr Mitchell, the consultant from Urology to explain the results of my scans and also explain the treatment i would receive (my surgery).

On Wednesday at 11 p.m i was informed that i would be moved to a ward, luckily i only had to wait 30 minutes before i was moved to ward 54 where i was put in a side room.

When i arrived the nurses were quick to give me more I.V fluids and antibiotics and also give me my first dose of 'super' painkiller to help with the pain i was feeling. the nurses on this ward were brilliant, i could not have asked for better care!

A special mention to Lorraine (although all the nurses were amazing) as she was a big support and comfort during my long Thursday night after my surgery, I'm sorry i couldn't say thank you and goodbye to you before i left.

The anaesthetic team i saw on Thursday before my surgery definitely helped calm my anxiety. They were calm, patient and gentle while they were explaining to me what they were doing and what i should expect to feel at the different drugs they were giving me. i really appreciate the time they took to talk me through what was happening.

My surgery was successful and i was released the next day with medication and general advice for my recovery at home.

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who was involved in the excellent care i received and I'm sorry i couldn't name you all for your efforts and dedication you all put in during my time at the hospital.
