"A & E- 0 Stars, Fracture Clinic- 5 stars"

About: University Hospital Of North Durham / Accident and emergency

My 17 year old son was taken to A&E with a suspected broken ankle, sustained while playing football.Unusually A&E was fairly quiet at the time with only a couple of people in the waiting area and a few treatment rooms empty, several staff standing chatting. When I arrived he had already had x rays and was waiting to speak to the Dr.who later told my son he'd sprained his ankle and could leave. I asked for crutches for my son as he couldn't support his own weight and was given the choice of paediatric crutches (my son is 6ft 3) or a pair of ancient filthy wooden ones which we were advised weren't suitable for his injury, so he had to have the latter. My son sat up from the trolley, vomited with the pain, then passed out. Dr said just leave when you're ready, no concern shown for my son then left the room. The following day I rang his GP and asked how we could get some suitable crutches and was advised to return to A&E. Not wanting a wasted journey, I rang before travelling and spoke to a HCA who advised we return and they would source suitable crutches. On our return HCA couldn't understand why we had the old wooden crutches when there was 'a cupboard full of suitable crutches', he showed concern for the position of my sons foot and queried if it was broken and requested we return if there was no improvement within next 48 hours. The following day I had to ring 111 as my son was in so much pain. An appointment was made at our local minor injuries unit within 30 mins, who checked him over then rang and made an appointment at the fracture clinic. Dr at the Fracture Clinic advised part of the foot hadn't been x-rayed . Once this was done we were advised my son had torn his ankle ligaments, foot was put in a cast and we went home. I am grateful to the HCA for their help with the crutches and the staff in the Fracture Clinic for their assistance, maybe you could show the A&E Dr decent patient care
