"Maternity unit and giving birth"

About: Borders General Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

Induced and c-section and breast feeding

I was over due by 10 days and was induced for two days, this was managed well but nobody really explained what would happen when gel was inserted.

Induction failed and I was given option to have c section, surgery staff very helpful.  In theatre it was a blur with about three different people asking and telling me things at same time.  Everyone was nice though and all went well.

Gave birth to healthy baby boy, we struggled with breast feeding and unfortunately it really wasnt looked at by anyone, he lost too much weight after we got home.  It would be better to have a good day with a mid wife helping with feeding if you are struggling.  It was very difficult having a c section to breast feed so it should be considered by the team.

Everyone was very nice though and I was looked after really well, my only issue really was feeding my baby and it should have been dealt with before I went home.

Congratulations on the birth of your son. Thank you for taking the time to let us know how things were for you. I appreciate how busy you will be with a new born baby at home.

I am sorry your induction of labour was not explained to you thoroughly. Hospital procedures can be difficult to understand if they are not explained fully and with the correct information you can feel more prepared.

Support with all aspects of care for you and your son should always be available and I apologise that you feel you did not receive the correct amount of care and support with breast feeding.

I shall share your comments with the staff in ward 17 in order that we can look at how we ensure all women receive the right information and support throughout their time in our care. It is important to us that we provide the best possible care to those who use our services

If you would like to discuss any points of your care I would be very happy to speak with you. My contact details - shona.finch@borders.scot.nhs.uk
