"Brilliant care in the Ambulatory Assessment Unit"

About: John Radcliffe Hospital / Accident and emergency

I was sent to A&E by the 111 service with concerns about my heart, and everyone from the paramedic, to the receptionists, right up to the doctor who discharged me could not have been more kind or helpful. I was assessed as soon as I got to A&E, then had a bit of a wait (understandable as there were more pressing cases than mine), but then was sent up to the Ambulatory Assessment Unit, and the care there was brilliant. I felt like I was being taken seriously and listened to, and frequently kept up to date with what was happening, how long things would take and the decisions being made. The ward was bright, clean and comfortable. Best of all was the nurse who took care of me; I'm terrified of blood tests and she had the tricky task of doing not one but two on me. She was very sympathetic and kind, comforting me throughout, and my friend was allowed to stay with me the whole time too. I also had to have an ECG, and even though I was feeling shaky, the nurse kept me smiling all the way through. The doctor and the consultant who then came to see me were also very kind and thorough, so I felt like I was in very good hands and not being rushed through, as they checked all aspects of my medical history just to be triply sure they could discharge me. When I was discharged, they gave me a card with a phone number to call if things deteriorated over the next few days which was reassuring to have. The one tiny extra thing that would have helped was if someone could have walked me up to the Assessment Unit as well as being given directions, as I was very dizzy and didn't know where I was going, but I know with the pressure staff are under that could be difficult. That being said, I can't emphasise enough how wonderful all the staff were and how well they looked after me. Thank you so much!
