"You can understand my confusion"

About: Evesham Community Hospital Worcestershire Royal Hospital / Accident and emergency Worcestershire Royal Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a service user),

Admitted by ambulance after my foot/ankle was accidentally run over ( car stopped on my ankle.... had to reverse off it) as did so I heard a good loud crack and having broken bones before I knew pretty well it was broken. It was also VERY painful.

I am not bothered about the wait as totally understand people worse than me rightly need to be seen first. It was good Friday evening and didn’t appear to be as busy as I thought it would be. I was brought in by ambulance. I told them exactly what had happened and I think they made notes.

Sent to x Ray .... poor staff member did their best and I was holding the plate for them to do best. Later on I was moved down a corridor and at 1 point it was mentioned for it to be immobilised.... then a nurse came and got crutches out of a cupboard and said there is no break at all and to weight bare on the foot with help if crutches and go home ( which obviously I wanted to anyway if possible) I tried to stand on it which brought me to tears as SO painful. They got a little impatient.... I said had broken bones before ( a professional with horses... need I say more! ! And I am NOT a whimp! ) and I also mentioned I heard the crack and sort of grinding noise. They said that’s nothing at all to go by and that they would go and do another job and come back in 20 mins and meanwhile to work at weight baring on it. They returned and saw me crying snd just said it is def not broken and you can walk in it and just be bruising... got a bit impatient again so I managed to get my heel sort of on the floor and I had to hop/ walk to exit.

Next day late morning I got a phone call from hospital to say that a specialist had looked at x rays and said looked to be a tiny crack and to go to Evesham minor injuries..... they said a fracture and arranged another app with Worc on Monday meanwhile they followed Worc consultant advice to plaster it. On Monday x rays   apparently revealed   2 fractures I believe. Was told that they also suspected further damage and would require surgery. Was told as so much swelling that it was best I was kept in so swelling could go down and they could re assess following morning.

Now... I have no complaints what so ever with the actual nursing care I received during my stay. The ward staff were friendly and very helpful. Ward was lovely and clean and the nursing staff working hard. I don’t feel I can recommend A and E on this occasion and have said that sadly in your text asking for feed back.

On the Tuesday of my stay another consultant came to see me.... asked what had happened as had no notes on my case.... however had looked at my x rays and said they could see no need for surgery .... fantastic news for me and I was/ am pleased.... to re plaster it and go home.   The plastering person came over and said it was still very swollen from the knee down and would of expected it to have gone down more. So they've taped it together with instructions that if really swells   to un tape it if needed.   I was then given some injections for DVT.... but only info I got was... you just inject self into stomach.... no one showed me how to do this.   Looked at instructions! ! Plus a friend helped.

Now the point of this is actually to hopefully be constructive criticism. I am a fan of our wonderful NHS and our hard working drs and nurses. No one I understand would mean for this sort of thing to happen   however personally I feel that 1 hand doesn’t seem to know what the other hand is doing! !   Who do I believe? I go back on Monday supposedly for another Re assessment ( x rays? ? ! ! )... who knows! !

I am sure you can understand my confusion.... from definitely not broken and try and walk on it which I did.... to a tiny crack.... to be told 2 fractures and possible surgery to back to 1 fracture... re plaster and go home! ! ! Majority of your staff are amazing at Worc hospital and it is a lovely building. So please accept this as a way to maybe help as this sort of thing can give you very negative reviews. Sorry a long post but hoping if it is read that it can be taken on board in a positive way. I was given a card on the ward to fill in re care in the T and O ward.... I gave top marks for the staff and their care and I stand by this. Just the other.. “stuff”! !

Regards
