About: Basildon University Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

Hip operation on 14/4/19. Ward was Linford. Discharged yesterday.

1)After surgery given 2 compression socks. Nurse put 1 on my good let straight away, was told the other one would go on 6 hours after op. 9 hrs later reminded them and was told that I don’t need it. Next day Dr asks why I only have 1 sock on? He says he’ll speak to nurse and get it put on. Nurse comes back a couple of hours later and says I don’t need it. Discharge day I’m given pairs of compression socks and told they MUST be worn on BOTH legs all the time for 6 weeks - nurse looks down and asks ‘Why have you only got on 1 sock?’ 2) Discharge time. Given a pack of Lansoprazole and no painkillers? Been on co-codamol, ibuprofen and morphine for 5 days and, despite sending someone from the pharmacy to see me the day before about pain relief and me telling them what I needed, they would’ve sent me home with none. They refused to give my ibuprofen as I can ‘pop’ out and buy that myself. Cant’t drive and I’m on crutches. Really, they couldn’t stretch to a pack of ibuprofen? 3) Upon discharge I’m given a bag of injections to be administered by myself at home. No prior warning. Would’ve been nice to know that was an expectation. 4) Just as I’m leaving I’m told District Nurse will be visiting daily for the next 6 weeks to check wound and administer injections. Told them the address I would be at for the next 3/4 days. District Nurse turns up and shows me how to administer the injection myself, doesn’t need to check the wound apparently, and signs me off. They also sent a District Nurse to my home address where they get no reply and rapid response unit phone my daughter trying to track me down 5) Surgeon tells me toe touch only on crutches for 6 weeks. Discharge doctor tells me to start gradually putting weight on my foot straight away. Luckily I’m still with it and I have family to speak on my behalf. I worry for those people who are elderly or confused. When you are in pain following an operation you shouldn’t feel as if you are in Alice in Wonderland world where everything is confusing and no 2 people tell you the same thing. The most common phrase I’ve heard over the last few days is ‘Oh, you should’ve been told.’
