"I broke my leg/ankle in three different places"

About: East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust / Emergency ambulance Pilgrim Hospital / Accident and emergency Pilgrim Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was biking to work with my husband in early April at approx 2. 15 pm ish. And as we came round a corner through Queen’s Park in Mablethorpe my husband stopped his bike because of the metal barrier. And I tried to brake but crashed right into the back of my husbands bike wheel. Came off mine and as I came down I heard a snap. My husband just thought I was being a whimp and told me to get up. But as he turned round he could see that I did more damage to it. We asked someone there to help but they just laughed and walked of.

My husband rang for a ambulance but they said it could be 2 hours or longer as there was a real bad accident somewhere. I was lying on the floor for over a hour or more and it was getting cold there. So my husband rang my mum and she came from chapel. As we didn’t want me to get anymore colder. So they tried to get me up on one leg to slide in the back of my mums car. So she could take me to Boston hospital as it would of been quicker. And they rang the ambulance to let them know. When I got to hospital they did everything to help me and then I had to had a operation on the Saturday and finally got let out on the Wednesday but still need to go back for check ups as my ankle was broken in 3 different places.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are sorry to hear that you have been unwell, and I apologise that we were unable to get an ambulance to you sooner. I do hope your ankle is now on the mend.

We are keen to hear about such experiences so that we may learn from them in the future. We would like to fully investigate this incident through our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) team. Please provide as much detail as you can (e.g. date, time and location), so that they might identify the key issues of this incident. You may contact them via telephone on 0333 012 4216 or email emas.pals@nhs.net. Once this has been conducted, we can then share their findings with you.
