"We feel let down"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Respiratory Medicine (Wards 2, 6,7 10 & 16)

(as a relative),

My mum was admitted to hospital in December 2018 and passed away five days later. To us her family, her death was sudden and we still feel we don’t have complete closure. We were never told how ill she was. In fact she was terminally ill. The consultant told us this in January 2019 when we were looking for answers. He said it wasn’t the case of if she was going to die. It was the case of when. Our mums death certificate states respiratory failure 2 and undiagnosed progressive neurological condition. We feel that she never received end of life care and as a family we have been left devestated. We were never told this and feel guilty because we could have cared for her differently and been more prepared for her passing. We also feel let down.

Dear Assessor 1

I am very sorry to hear about your Mum and my condolences to you and your family.

Losing a loved one can be devastating for families and having unanswered questions about your Mum’s care and treatment will have only added to your distress. Please accept my apologies for this.

I have already spoken to the Lead Nurse who would be happy to meet with you to look into this and hopefully provide you with some closure. If you feel this would be helpful to you, please get in touch with your Mum’s personal details so that we can look into this and hopefully provide you with some closure. My email address is Nicole.McInally@ggc.scot.nhs.uk
