I was present with my friend during a recent visit from the mental health team for the elderly to her home. During this visit a cognitive impairment test was given which would be compared to last time.
The letter making the appointment stated the professional’s name, date and time of visit. Two people arrived, which unnerved my friend as she then felt outnumbered. Both were strangers.
I would suggest that their was consistency of staff wherever possible. We (friends and family) will also try to ensure that the same person is present at each visit. I also feel that it would be helpful if the letter included the purpose of the visit.
The cognitive test doesn’t seem to pick up the agitation level or distress that friends/family witness at times. I found it difficult to speak to staff about this in the presence of my friend. I also found it difficult to speak about her driving difficulties at the meeting as my friend denies that there are any difficulties.
I found speaking about difficulties such as driving, coordinating and cooking food etc difficult in front of my friend, as she is at the difficult stage of denial.
A business card with contact details was left with my friend. If I were to ask her for this, she may become verbally aggressive. I suggest a card is given to both patient and whoever is accompanying.
I hope you find this feedback constructive.
