"Pain Clinic Absolutely Abhorent."

About: Southmead Hospital / Pain Management

Having had Chronic Pancreatitis for over four years, I have required opiate-based pain relief. Pancreatitis is well-documented to be one of the most painful and debilitating diseases known to man. I have had excellent treatment decisions from my consultants and surgeons, though every single time the pain clinic get involved it all falls apart around me. They are far too reliant on textbook scenarios and studies that do not give fair mention of patients' comments and experiences. For example, having been on opiates for a long time, I have become somewhat tolerant to them and require a maintenance dose of 360mg of morphine per 24 hours. The pain clinic refer to an ancient study which declares that there is 'no clinic evidence to prove that any doses over 120mg/24hrs are of benefit to the patient'. However, there are thousands of scholarly writings supporting the fact that not all patients react the same, not all patients become as tolerant as others, and not all patients benefit from low-dose opiates. 120mg/24hrs is fine for the 'average' patient. I am not the 'average' textbook patient. My GP is a little reluctant, but still prepared to prescribe me 360mg/24hrs, by surgeons and consultants are more than happy with this dosing and, more importantly, I THE PATIENT, can have the most productive life on this dose. Every single time they start weaning me down on advice from the pain clinic, I end up in hospital with crippling pain and sometimes hallucinations from withdrawal. Every time I end up being put back up to my usual dose of 360mg/24 hours and I'm at my best until the pain clinic poke their noses in again. I am sick to the back teeth of constantly fearing the pain clinic's interventions which harm my wellbeing. It is unfair and to be blunt, doing my head in. Constantly fighting their decisions is not helpful to me and eventually ends up with me becoming incredibly ill and back in hospital. They do not consider my opinions, convey my opinions or even give me the chance to have a say in my pain management, which is paramount in receiving the best treatment that suits each individual patient. I understand that their is an opiate crisis around the whole world, but it makes it unfair for those of us in general need for the right levels of pain relief. Sort it out before we all end up suffering unnecessarily.
