"Outstanding care in the Stroke Unit"

About: Northwick Park Hospital / General Medicine

(as a relative),

My mum was brought to Northwick Park Hospital after having a stroke whilst out shopping. She was taken to Haldane Ward where she received outstanding care from the nursing staff, doctors, speech therapists and occupational therapists. She began by making good progress and a discharge date was proposed. However, whilst she was still in the hospital, she had a further massive stroke which left her paralysed on one side, unable to speak and unable to swallow. The doctor (Dr Roanis) who spoke to us about her condition showed professionalism and compassion. In consultation with family members, it was decided that the best option was that mum would be given palliative care. Such a difficult decision to make.

The staff on the ward treated mum with compassion, respect, gentle care and patience. I was so impressed by the dedication and support given by every member of the team. I would particularly like to thank Jez who arranged for a bed to be provided for a family member to stay, Nisha, Sunny, Vijay and Malchik who showed us outstanding kindness and care. Thank you all for being a credit to the NHS. My mum used to work as a paediatric speech therapist in the community. Her work often involved her going to Northwick Park Hospital for meetings. She would have been proud of the care that she received.

Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your mother's recent admission to Haldane ward. I was very sorry to learn first of all that your mother had a stroke that resulted in her admission, and that while she was a patient of ours she suffered a more serious one.

I can appreciate the distress that you and your family would have felt and I am only glad that the staff who were taking care of your mother were able to make this experience a little more bearable for you. I will of course ensure that your kind words are shared with the team responsible for Haldane ward and thank you for taking the trouble to note the names of some of the staff who made a difference.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience at what I imagine is a very difficult time for you. I know that the staff who were looking after your mother will be very thankful for your praise and to know that their efforts have been appreciated.

Kind regards

Peter Hare
