"Sick sinus syndrome"

About: Derriford Hospital / Cardiology

Attended pacing clinic for routine check, and based on ILR recoding it was noted two long episode of Sinus Arrest one of 45 second and other 25 seconds over 3months period.

I didn’t fully appreciate its significance, but the staffs facial expressions were as good as formal dialogue at that time.

I was told not to leave the hospital and inpatient stay was required and a bed was found very promptly.

I was told by the consultant a pacemaker was needed based on clinical findings.

The care I received from the whole cardiac team was truly exceptional and a credit to Derriford hospital.

Clearly they had significant clinical pressures during my stay, but at no time did this compromise my treatment or the positive attitude from all staff I met from domestics to consultants.

To be candid it was quite humbling an experience.

With time on my hands during my four day stay

I couldnt avoid calculating my treatment costs which my estimation were excess of

£8-10,000 which was a shock.

It did of course highlight how very fortunate to we are to have such outstanding and enviable nhs service.

Most patients do not fully understand their treatment cost implications.

I would suggest on all “discharge summary”

a appropriate/generic treatment cost was added to enable patients to contemplate the true value of such care, as we mostly take this for granted.

Very many thanks to you all for my care and improved quality of life

Regards

A very Happy patient.

Kenny Naughton, Cluster Manager for Gastoenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy, has responded to say:

Thank you for the kind feedback and appreciation of the hard work that goes into each patient's journey. It is certainly humbling to understand how much each patient receives in treatment costs. Although a useful exercise and a good idea for patients, I don't think we are in a position to indicate these costs to patients.

Thanks again for your feedback.

Kind regards

Kenny
