I have a genetically inherited blood disorder for which I have received treatment and care from the Royal London and University College London hospitals. In recent years I have been frustrated by not seeing the same doctor on two consecutive appointments, the constant change makes me feel as if I'm not been seen by someone who knows my medical history or me as a person. However, the care I have received and continue to receive through the Haematology clinics is good.
In recent years I have had other forms of treatment involving hernia operations and treatment of leg ulcers. The leg ulcers are a recurrent problem, the vascular nurse at the Royal Free who has been treating me for this in the last year has been excellent. This nurse has managed to heal the wounds where others have found it difficult to do so leaving me vulnerable to infection and pain.
I have also been referred to the orthopaedic department at the Royal Free for treatment as a result of deep vein thrombosis.
Whilst I'm happy with the treatment I receive from the haematology and orthopaedic departments when I attend their clinics I am dismayed at the lack of communication between the two departments. This is worrying and distressing when treatment is cancelled at the last minute because treatment options have not been discussed by the two departments. Planned surgery was cancelled when my haematology consultant was made aware of the plans at a late stage and put a halt to the surgery because of the need for specialist haematology management.
I have similar issues when I present myself in A&E departments at different hospitals depending on where the ambulance service choose to take me, even if I say I need to be seen at a specific hospital.
"lack of communication between departments"
