"From a heightened state of anxiety to total reassurance"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as the patient),

I had central chest pain and as well as being in pain I was extremely anxious. I was seen really quickly. After an ECG Dr McGuffie came to explain what was wrong with me. I could t believe how quickly I went from a heightened state of anxiety to total reassurance. He explained in very easily understood words what was wrong with me and took lots of time to ensure I understood what he said. The unit was busy but I at no time felt hurried.

Dear Harvey2019,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your experience in the Emergency Department. Chest pain can be very frightening so I was not surprised to read that you were anxious. I am delighted that you were seen quickly and that Dr McGuffie was able to reassure you.

We believe as a team that we can learn from excellence. You have summarised perfectly what makes a good consultation between a doctor (or any healthcare provider) and a patient: offering explanations in plain English, ensuring the information is understood and allowing time for questions. Our whole team should be aiming for this every time.

I will ensure that this is shared with Dr McGuffie and the wider team at our morning huddle.

I hope you are making a good recovery at home.

Claire

Dear Harvey 2019,

I have shared your feedback with Dr McGuffie who was delighted to read it. He said it has 'put a spring' in his step. I have also shared it with the wider Emergency Department Team and we may develop a project to see whether we can ensure that we give explanations in plain English at all times. As you an see patient feedback is important as it allows us to improve. I will be back in touch.

Claire
