"Hugely impressed with the quality of care"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / General surgery Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Urology

(as the patient),

I recently had a TURP at Treliske (due to a benign enlarged prostate) and wish to say how hugely impressed I was as the quality of the care that I received. I had a number of anxieties about the operation and the extent of my recovery, not least because I had been catheterised for about six months.

However, the procedure was clearly explained to me, both before and after surgery, and I was left with a positive feeling about the days that would follow. The post-operative care was exemplary, being both sympathetic and encouraging. Unfortunately, due to the time I had been catheterised, I had some residual infection and was unable to leave the hospital as early as I would have liked. Nonetheless, I was always kept well-informed about my circumstances and my treatment, and felt that my best interests were always a priority. Subsequently, I have made a full recovery and feel better, physically and mentally, than I have for a very long time. I have nothing but praise for the whole team on Surgical Admissions, and would wish to reassure anybody awaiting a TURP that they should feel confident about the quality of the treatment that they will receive, and their longer-term recovery.

Dear RPC

Thank you so much for taking the time to post such positive feedback for our Surgery and Urology teams. Firstly, please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you on here, my name is Michaela and I am the Patient Experience Coordinator here at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust; part of my role is to read all patient feedback we receive on Care Opinion and ensure that it is shared with the relevant staff.

I am so pleased to read that you were hugely impressed with the quality of care that you received. Especially as understandably you had a number of anxieties about the operation and the extent of your recovery, due to your prior experiences. It is fantastic that the team obviously communicated with you so clearly throughout and explained your treatment from start to finish.

I will of course be sharing your kind words and praise with the teams who would have been involved in your care as I know they will be thrilled, especially to learn that you have now made a full recovery and feel better, physically and mentally than you have done for a very long time.

Thank you again for sharing your journey and I hope that by reading your feedback you will help alleviate any anxiety and concerns for any other patients in similar circumstance, who may also need to have a TURP procedure.

With kind regards

Michaela Brewer, Patient Experience Coordinator
