"no longer qualify for free podiatry"

About: Locala Community Partnerships CIC / Podiatry

(as a service user),

I have been using the podiatry service in Kirklees for at least 15 years, then, at my last appointment at the age of 83 and loss of sight in one eye, I was told that I would no longer qualify for free podiatry treatment to have my nails cut. I cannot cut my own toe nails, if I could I would, I'd be concerned about doing more harm than good.

Hi there

Thank you for your comments. I'm sorry to hear that you are concerned about your ongoing podiatry care. As a result of a recent Public Consultation there have been a number of changes to our Podiatry service. The podiatry service needed to change to continue to provide a high quality service for the increasing number of people with high clinical needs such as rheumatoid arthritis, peripheral arterial disease and diabetes, which require a more specialist service.

We have a set of criteria which determines who should be seen by the podiatry team. There have been a number of patients on our caseload who do not meet the criteria and are not eligible for care. As a result of the Public Consultation it was recognised that these patients without foot health problems would be discharged from the service

From January 2019, all patients have been assessed to review whether they will still be eligible for care. It sounds like you have had your assessment by the team and that you do not meet the criteria. All discharged patients are being given details of alternative provision across Kirklees, this is either self-care which would not be suitable for you, using a local independent podiatrist or chiropodist or to visit one of the AgeUK Nail Clinics. These clinics are provided in seven locations across Kirklees and offer toe nail cutting and foot care advice at £15 per session. Tel: 01484 535 994. There are also sessions available at Huddersfield University Podiatry Department, 01484 472201

If you wish to discuss your particular case, please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Liaison Team on 0303 003 4529 (option 1).
